Unlocking the G. Loomis Story Archives (finally)…

Hi Friends,

I have always wanted to share some of the G. Loomis fishing stories with you, but it has been difficult to find them, and when we did, difficult to transpose them to paper. But, persistence has finally paid off. Staring with this issue of our newsletter we will include a story from a G. Loomis customer or one of G. Loomis’ management team about their fishing experience. These fish stories really ring true; they tell what a great experience it is.

We have stories from Bruce Holt (G. Loomis General Manager), legendary basketball coach Bobby Knight, Fishing Hall of Fame members Jerry McKinnis, Billy and Bobby Murray, and world famous golfer Johnny Miller.

We hope you will enjoy these timeless stories. After all, a big part of fishing is relating the experience to others, perhaps with a wee bit of embellishment. So, take a look at our last feature for the first installment from the G. Loomis archives.
Ohio River Stripers and How to Catch Them
(at least, in our opinion)…

Starting in late September everyone at American Legacy Fishing has had Striper Fever, and can’t wait to get in the boat and head for the locks and dam in Newburgh, Indiana. As fall progresses, the fish seem to get more aggressive and a lot bigger.

So, how are we catching them? Here’s the scoop:

We use 50# braided line on a fast action, heavy power casting rod such as the G. Loomis MBR844C GLX or the MUR844C-MB Muskie Rod. On the end we slip on a sinker slide such as an Eagle Claw, Sea Striker, or Quick Slide. On the sinker slide clip we hang a 3 oz river sinker and after that we tie on a saltwater barrel swivel.

On the other end of the barrel swivel we tie on 3 ft of 20# 100% fluorocarbon line and on the end of that a 6/0 Gamakatsu (or similar) live bait hook.

Now, the trick: On to the 6/0 hook use a Storm Wildeye or similar 6″ long plastic shad flutter tail (some call it a button tail) in WHITE. Once rigged up get up to the side of the heaviest turbulence water right below the dam and cast in to the most turbulent, rushing part of the water. Keep your line tight, let the sinker work toward bottom, and then work the rig back to the boat. And hold on…big stripers are on the bottom, small stripers tend to be on the top. Our Pros have had the greatest success after the sun is up in the mornings up until about noon. Then the bite seems to disappear.

We hope you will try this and e-mail us pictures of any big ones for our “Braggin Board.” Good luck and tight lines.

Cold Weather Today. Can Christmas be far away?
I don’t know about where you are, but here in Southern Indiana we’ve had a very enjoyable fall (read not cold or rainy). But, now it is COLD and we are reminded that Thanksgiving and the Christmas shopping season is just around the corner. The crowds, the pushing and shoving, the scarce parking spaces … it just seems to take some of the fun out of the season.

So, here’s an idea. Instead of guessing what that fisherman or fisherwoman would really like, consider one of American Legacy Fishing’s Gift Cards. They come in denominations of $50.00 to $1,000.00 and are easily purchased on our web site. No pushing, no shoving, no traffic jams, no hassle. You can even choose the design.

Introducing SUNLINE
World’s Best Fishing Line…from Japan

Ready for the World’s Best Fishing Line for that your favorite rod and reel outfit? Think you will never find a line that will match your needs? Well, we have a wonderful surprise for you. American Legacy Fishing Co. is now the Premier Sunline supplier in the USA.
11.09.08C

So what is Sunline? Well, it is 8 different lines of monofilament or fluorocarbon composition that are to fishing line what Megabass is to fishing lures - a completely new dimension. The Sunline products are designed to meet or exceed the fisherman’s needs, but also address the shortcoming of the current assortment of monofilament and fluorocarbon lines. The fluorocarbon lines are now manageable yet strong and sensitive. The monofilament lines are practically impervious to sunlight and UV rays, long lived, with little stretch. There are lines specifically for spinning applications as well as camouflage lines (in fluorocarbon much less).
Every Sunline product is now in stock in all pound strengths. Whether you need 2 lb test FC Sniper Fluorocarbon, Machine Gun Cast monofilament in 30 lb test, or Biwa Guide Special Fluorocarbon line specifically for spinning reels we have it. Now there is no excuse to loose fish because of your line….

G. Loomis Merlot Color Rods to be Discontinued…

We continue to add new lure colors in Megabass. No, there is not a red and green Christmas edition as yet, but there sure are a lot of new colors coming out monthly. We have also received a few Megabass knit caps, many more rods, and several reels.
this is a product that works great as a stocking stuffer or a birthday cake decoration (no, that’s not that weird), or a party favor for your fishing pals. I have even been known to use one of the Siglett lures to scare one of my daughters when placed on top of her desert. Anyway, keep these really neat lures in mind for the holidays. Whether as a fun gift or a stocking stuffer they really are wonderful.

SHIMANO Reels
Get A Quote; Be Surprised

If you use a Loomis rod we know you want the best reel on that rod as well. Honestly, Shimano is just the worlds’ best reels. Period. Expensive? Yes. Good? exceptional. Yes, they come in a wide range of models with prices to match. We are a Shimano Top-Shelf dealer which means we carry the top (read: most expensive) models. Who knows better what reel will best match up with your Loomis rod?
So, if you need a Shimano Reel please give us an opportunity to quote you. Our prices are very competitive and we try to match any other dealer’s pricing. Additionally, you receive our world class service and support. Try us, you will like what we quote.

G. Loomis Prices Increase Jan. 1, 09

Once again we remind you: As of January 1, 2009 G. Loomis will increase prices between 5% to 15% on almost all rods, blanks, and accessory items. Currently our inventory is very strong, so now is the time to buy. If you are in the UK, Europe, or Australia I know the currency fluctuations have made Loomis more expensive, but please keep in mind our Very Low Shipping Costs, the Free Jacket Offer, and the impending price increase. All combined, it’s a very compelling reason to buy now.

Another Story from the G. Loomis Archives…..

“A FEW EAGLES AND BIRDIES.THEN STRAIGHT TO THE FISH”

By Johnny Miller             11.16.08H

(In the mid - 70s, Hall of Famer Johnny Miller shot the lowest-ever final round score to win the U.S. Open. Nowadays, when he isn’t out on the water with one of his GLX rods, he’s a network television golf commentator.)

Back in my early days on the PGA tour, I actually planned a lot of my tournaments around how good the fishing was.

Now, you might think admitting such a thing would bring into question my devotion to the sport of golf, but in fact I think it’s quite the opposite. It removes any question as to my devotion to the sport of fishing.

I’ve been hooked on fishing most of my life and tournament season is no different. As soon as I finish my round for that day, win or lose, good or bad, I grab my rod and head for the water. You’d be surprised at how simply fishing till dark can completely relieve the pressures of the tour and the crowds.

Who knows? Maybe professional fishermen feel the same way. Maybe after a grueling, fight-to-the-bitter-end bass tournament they like nothing better to relax than nine holes on the links. But somehow I don’t think so. There’s just something special about fishing. Something about the scenery and the solitude and memories you share with family and friends that are worth their weight in gold.

One of my fondest memories of childhood was fishing for trout with my father and my brother, Ronnie, on Lake Merced. I was probably all of about five years old and after that trip, my fate was sealed. I fell in love with fishing.

As I got older, I continued to fish, trying to follow in my brother’s footsteps.

See, Ronnie wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill fisherman. He was the absolute fishing nut of all time. He fished every day.

I lost Ronnie to a drowning accident when he was just sixteen. And I miss not having him around to fish with now, battling over who caught the most, or the biggest, or the best. But I’ll never forget those memories of fishing with him as a kid. And I m grateful for all the new memories I make every time I go out today.

New Cold Weather Clothing from G. Loomis…

Hi Friends,

It looks like cold Fall weather is finally here. We had a wonderfully mild Fall here in Southern Indiana, but now the realities of winter just around the corner have arrived. The wind has picked up, temperatures have dropped, and there’s a frosty chill in the air. But, fishing is definitely strong with crappie and stripers leading the parade. Big bass deep and lots of other late Fall and winter fishing really provide some great trophy opportunities for us all. And this fact is not lost on G. Loomis. They offer a wonderful selection of cold weather clothing that will keep you warm even in the coldest days on the water.

Layering is the secret here. Layering that still provides comfort and complete freedom of movement. Start with the new G. Loomis micro fiber line of long and short sleeve t-shirts. These provide great wicking as well as next-to-the-body warmth. Next consider a Loomis long sleeve or short sleeve cotton t-shirt or one of the 80% cotton/20% poly sweatshirts. Finally there are a great assortment of G. Loomis fleece or lined jackets. My favorite are the fleece jackets. The nylon fleece performance jackets are wonderful for these fall days. The Windblock performance jacket is best for the colder, windy days on the water with a bigger “wind block” area up front (keeps my belly warm) and fleece everywhere. Finally, the Loomis tournament jacket with its lined hood will allow you to get on the water even on the coldest of days. All are in stock in sizes from small to XX-large.
We all use these jackets, sweatshirts, and t-shirts here at American Legacy and just love them. Show your colors this Fall and Winter and stay on the water. See our web site for all the details and prices.
G. Loomis to Discontinue most GL Classic 2 piece fly rods in 2009…
We have just learned that effective December 1, 2008 G. Loomis will be discontinuing most of the 2 piece GL Classic Fly Rods. The line will shrink from 29 rods in GL2, GL3 and GLX to 15 models/materials. Do we agree with this decision? No. Can we do anything about it? Not really. The reality is that American Legacy Fishing sells as many of these rods in a year as all of the rest of G. Loomis’ dealers combined. So we will obviously miss the discontinued models. There will only be 4 GLX models , 6 GL2 models, and 5 GL3 left. These GLX rods have been called “Anti-Gravity” by some dealers.

We currently have every model in stock and will do our best to maintain this inventory as long as we can. That said, we strongly suggest that if one of these rods is currently on your wish list you consider a purchase very soon. Right now these rods ship Free to any location worldwide. And although the US dollar has strengthen against most world currencies, they are still a great bargain when compared to pricing elsewhere in the world. Fair notice here.

“Instant” Heirlooms and why they are important to me….
My wife of 42 years and I have 7 awesome grandkids (so far). 5 girls and 2 boys. The two boys (6 and 9) can’t get enough fishing, whether with me or their grandma or their parents. The girls show some promise, but two are 18 month old twins, one is 4 and seems fascinated by the concept, and the oldest two (13 and 15) are still dealing with hormones and a general rebellion against any authority. But these two love their grandpa and will fish if I do. So, this year I got each grandchild a new G. Loomis spinning rod, a middle priced Shimano reel, and some Sunline that I thought would be “goof proof” when teaching kids how to fish. The rod and reel were perfect, but the idea of “goof proof” line for a 6 or 9 year old has proven to be somewhat of a fairy tale. I have never seen as much line under the spool wrapped around the center shaft as I saw one day on my 6 year old grandson’s reel.

But I’m off the subject here…My point is that a G. Loomis rod will always be something that these kids can keep and use and even pass on to their kids (our great grandkids). There is the G. Loomis Limited Lifetime Warranty, the reputation as the best fishing rod made, and the simple fact that any G. Loomis rod ever made is still “current” as far as performance is concerned. In today’s throw-away world I think this is unusual. I just hope my grandkids will grow into fishing even more and continue this wonderful sport for many years to come. If they do they will always have these heirlooms and memories of who introduced them to the sport and who gave them the world’s best rod.

What our Team didn’t like about my SUNLINE introduction….

Last week I introduced everyone to Sunline Fluorocarbon and premium Monofilament line. Our Pro Team said “yes, but you didn’t include and real information about each of the eight models. After all, these are “technical lines.” OK, I admit that maybe that the intro was a bit rushed, so here are quick summaries of each line and it’s attributes. Sorry if I was too brief last week:
Super FC Sniper: Supple, strong, no memory whatsoever, super sensitive, invisible, consistent, abrasion resistant, general purpose for serious anglers. Clear; 2 lb to 20 lb; 200 yd spools
Super Natural Mono: manageable, UV ray resistant, supple, consistent strength, great knot strength, minimum stretch, low memory, virtually invisible. Clear and Green; 4 lb to 30 lb; 330 yd spools
Machinegun Cast Mono: Very low friction, amazingly long casts, high accuracy, great knot strength, UV ray resistant, very round, low stretch, supple. Copper red; 4.5 lb to 30 lb; 150 meter and 100 meter (25 & 30 lb) spools
Shooter Defier Mono: Designed for hard baits, casts very long, great accuracy, abrasion resistant, supple, very strong, virtually invisible. Stealth Dark Green; 13 lb to 22 lb; 85 yd spools
Shooter METAN Invisible Fluorocarbon: Invisible in brown to dark green cover, camo brown-tones color, no memory, sensitive, abrasion resistant, supple. Camo Brown/Green/dark Gray; 2 lb to 30 lb; 100 meter and 75 meter (8 lb to 30 lb) spools
Shooter METAN Green Fluorocarbon: Invisible in green tone cover, no memory, sensitive, abrasion resistant, supple. Camo Deep Green/Spring Green/Bright Green; 4 lb to 30 lb; 100 meter and 75 meter (20lb to 30 lb) spools
Biwa Guide Special Fluorocarbon: Specific for spinning reels, invisible, supple, super strong, big bass line, abrasion resistant, supple, no memory. Clear; 6 lb to 8 lb; 100 meter spools
Super Fluorocarbon Shooter: Bass pro model, super sensitive, tenacious, rugged, low stretch, abrasion resistant, supple. Clear; 7 lb to 25 lb; 150 meter and 100 meter (16 lb to 25 lb) spools

Megabass baits really DO make a difference…

Recently we have heard, on more occasions than we would have believed, that fishermen have caught fish using the Megabass lures when others have been “skunked” at the same time in similar presentations. At first I was somewhat skeptical, but we keep getting these reports. It seems that perhaps the color-changing finish or the added dimension of movement are making big differences in quite a few tournaments. I’m sure the super-sharp hooks help as well. Models such as the Vision 110, Vibration-X, and Deep X-100 and Deep-X 200 are catching BIG fish and BIG quantities. This at the same time similar lures just can’t get the hook-ups.
If you haven’t tried any of the Megabass lures we really hope you will give them a try. My personal experience in what I like to call casual (non-tournament) fishing really confirms this. I used an X-70 the other day on a small lake and just killed the bass. No big boys, but lots of fish that really made our day. Give these wonderful lures a try. You just don’t know what you’re missing.

SHIMANO Reels
Please give us a chance to quote you on any Top-Shelf Shimano reel. We are very competitive and offer the USA Warranty and great service on any of your Shimano needs. Most reels are in stock or readily available from Shimano. Most reels will ship the same day or at the least the same week.

G. Loomis Prices Increase Jan. 1, 09
Once again we remind you: As of January 1, 2009 G. Loomis will increase prices between 5% to 15% on almost all rods, blanks, and accessory items.
